Privacy Policy

1. Who We Are

ModernMoney (“we,” “us,” or “our”) is a personal budgeting application operated by Zach Terflinger. We can be reached at zdterflinger@gmail.com.

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect your information when you use ModernMoney at modernmoneybudget.com (the “Service”).

2. Information We Collect

Account Information

When you create an account, we collect your email address and a hashed password. We use Supabase for authentication — your password is never stored in plain text.

Financial Data You Enter

ModernMoney stores the budgeting data you provide, including:

  • Income amounts and sources
  • Budget categories and spending limits
  • Manual transaction entries
  • Savings goals, debt balances, and payment history

This data is stored in your account and is only visible to you.

Bank Connection Data (Teller)

If you choose to connect a bank account, we use Teller.io as our bank connectivity provider. When you connect a bank account:

  • Teller handles the bank login flow directly — we never see or store your bank username or password
  • Teller provides us with an access token, which we store securely server-side and never expose to the browser
  • We use this token to fetch your transaction history and account balances from Teller's API
  • Transaction data (merchant name, amount, date) is stored in your account to power the budgeting features

Teller's own privacy practices are governed by their privacy policy at teller.io/legal/privacy.

Usage Data

We may collect basic technical data such as your browser type, device type, and pages visited, primarily through Vercel's hosting infrastructure. This data is aggregated and not linked to individual users.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your information solely to provide and improve the Service:

  • To authenticate you and secure your account
  • To display your budgets, transactions, and financial summaries
  • To sync transactions from your connected bank accounts
  • To send transactional emails (e.g. email confirmation, password reset)
  • To improve the app based on aggregated usage patterns

We do not sell your data. We do not use your financial data for advertising. We do not share your personal information with third parties except as described in this policy.

4. Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored in Supabase, a PostgreSQL database hosted on AWS infrastructure. All data is encrypted at rest and in transit using TLS.

Row-Level Security (RLS) is enforced on all database tables — your data is only accessible to your authenticated account. No other user can access your financial data.

Bank access tokens from Teller are stored server-side only and are never exposed to the client browser.

While we take security seriously and implement industry-standard protections, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.

5. Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, your personal data and financial records will be deleted within 30 days.

If you disconnect a bank account, we will delete the associated Teller access token immediately. Historical transaction data you have already imported will remain in your account unless you delete it.

6. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access — request a copy of the data we hold about you
  • Correction — request correction of inaccurate data
  • Deletion — request deletion of your account and all associated data
  • Portability — request an export of your data in a portable format
  • Withdraw consent — disconnect your bank account at any time from within the app

7. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services to operate ModernMoney:

Each of these providers has their own privacy policy governing their handling of data. We only share the minimum data necessary with each provider to operate the Service.

8. Children's Privacy

ModernMoney is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. For significant changes, we will notify you by email or by a notice within the app. Your continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
